PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian citizens holding valid foreign driving licences with no restrictions will soon be able to convert them into Malaysian Driving Licences under updated procedures announced by the government.

The Transport Ministry said applications will be accepted at all Road Transport Department (JPJ) offices nationwide beginning June 1, following improvements to existing conversion policies.

The ministry explained that the revised system is designed to support Malaysians living, working, or managing affairs overseas, ensuring their mobility is not disrupted when returning home or relocating.

“This initiative aligns with current developments and aims to ensure Malaysians abroad are not hindered in terms of mobility while complying with standard operating procedures set by JPJ,” the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (May 7).

Under the updated framework, eligible applicants must hold valid foreign driving licences without restrictions and will be subject to record verification and compliance checks before approval.

Previously, conversion was limited to specific categories, including Malaysians who obtained foreign licences before acquiring a Malaysian licence, participants of the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, and members of the diplomatic corps.

The ministry said the broader eligibility reflects current needs and the increasing number of Malaysians living abroad, especially amid global economic challenges.

“It also aims to streamline the conversion process while maintaining driving competency standards and regulatory compliance,” it added.

Full application guidelines, including required documents and fees, will be published on the JPJ official portal at Road Transport Department (JPJ) starting June 1.
