Istanbul, Türkiye: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday described Türkiye as an important partner for Malaysia, emphasizing the countries’ longstanding historical ties and mutual trust.
Speaking at a roundtable with Turkish business leaders organized by the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), which was attended by 46 Turkish companies, Anwar noted the strong historical connections, including ties dating back to the Ottoman Empire.
“We have excellent historical relations, and Türkiye and Malaysia serve as important bases for the region,” he said, highlighting the strategic significance of the partnership.
Prime Minister Anwar also praised Türkiye’s strengths in the defense industry, particularly in drone technology, and encouraged further cooperation in defense and high-tech sectors. He noted that Malaysia is economically stable and experiencing growth, creating opportunities for bilateral collaboration.
“Both countries should work together in areas such as artificial intelligence, banking, energy, semiconductors, and electrical and electronics,” he said, underlining the potential for synergistic growth.
Trade between Malaysia and Türkiye from January to November 2025 reached approximately $5 billion, reflecting growing economic ties between the two nations.
Anwar’s remarks signal Malaysia’s intention to deepen strategic, economic, and technological cooperation with Türkiye, building on historical relations and shared regional interests.
