PETALING JAYA – Malaysia and Turkmenistan have agreed to expand bilateral relations in new areas including artificial intelligence (AI), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), semiconductors, as well as human capital development.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the collaboration reflects the evolving relationship between both countries, which is no longer confined to the oil and gas sector alone.
According to him, this commitment was expressed through the Malaysia-Turkmenistan Forum, which brought together industry leaders and the business communities of both nations to explore broader cooperation opportunities.
“Built upon the trust and friendship that have long been established, both countries are now committed to expanding cooperation in strategic areas including education, TVET, AI, semiconductors and human capital development,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Meanwhile, he said this year also marks the 30th anniversary of PETRONAS’ presence in Turkmenistan, which stands as testament to the success of long-term cooperation between both countries.
He said this achievement demonstrates that partnerships founded on mutual respect, technology transfer and expertise sharing can deliver lasting benefits.
Earlier, Anwar and President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov witnessed the signing of several key documents, including the Framework Agreement between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of Turkmenistan on long-term cooperation for the development of the country’s hydrocarbon resources.
Also signed was the Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) for Block 19 and Block 20 between PETRONAS and State Concern Turkmennebit as well as State Enterprise Hazarnebit.
In addition, both parties also signed a Cooperation Agreement for the implementation of 2D seismic studies for the northern offshore blocks between PETRONAS and State Concern Turkmennebit.
Anwar said the agreements reached will open a new chapter in Malaysia-Turkmenistan relations.
“It also serves as an example of how Global South nations can build mutually beneficial cooperation for the progress and prosperity of their people.”
