Malaysia, Kyrgyz Republic Call for Afghanistan’s Re-engagement with International Community

PUTRAJAYA, June 25, 2025— Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic have jointly called for renewed international efforts to re-engage with Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the country’s current administration under specific conditions.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov during his official visit to Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said both nations agreed that Afghanistan should not be left isolated from the global community.
“We believe Afghanistan should be accepted into the international community, though this should come with certain conditions or observations,” said Anwar.
The Malaysian Prime Minister acknowledged Kyrgyzstan’s geographical and cultural proximity to Afghanistan and expressed his appreciation for its deeper understanding of the situation.
“As a country closer to Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan has a more intimate perspective. We certainly welcome your views and advice on how to move forward,” Anwar added.
The call comes nearly four years after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, following the collapse of the U.S.-backed Afghan government and the withdrawal of American and NATO forces. Since then, the international community has grappled with how to engage with the Taliban-led administration.
Complete international sanctions have not been applied, despite the Taliban’s governance continuing to be controversial. Many nations have taken a cautious approach, balancing humanitarian concerns with political and human rights considerations.
Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic’s joint stance adds to a growing dialogue on how to approach Afghanistan’s reintegration into global diplomacy—particularly with an emphasis on stability, regional security, and humanitarian needs.
