Malaysia Considers Lowering Retail and Food Prices at KLIA to Enhance Tourist Experience

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 10: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture is reviewing plans to reduce retail and food prices at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), including at duty-free outlets and restaurants, amid concerns that airport prices are too high for travelers.

Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the move is being considered following feedback from tourists and domestic travelers who feel that food and retail prices at the airport are expensive.

“We promote local food from all communities in all outlets, but tourists have requested that food prices at the airport be reduced slightly. Domestic travelers, especially those from rural areas, also find prices high, especially when traveling with their families,” he said after officiating the launch of the ShopLAH by Malaysia Airports campaign at KLIA Terminal 1 on Tuesday.

Tiong said retailers and outlet operators have been encouraged to consider strategies that focus on higher sales volumes rather than relying on high prices, which could help sustain long-term profitability.

However, he noted that discussions with airport management and relevant stakeholders are necessary to determine the best mechanisms and solutions to ensure prices remain competitive while maintaining quality services and improving the overall airport experience for travelers.
