Malaysia Calls for “Severe Punitive Actions” After Israeli Airstrikes on Doha, Says PM Anwar

DOHA, 15 September (VoM): Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a forceful condemnation today at the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha, calling for “severe punitive actions” against Israel after what he described as Israeli airstrikes on the Qatari capital.

Speaking before regional leaders and dignitaries, Anwar said the attacks on Doha amounted to an assault on the sovereignty of a mediator state and a “reckless provocation that endangers the security of the region.” He called the strikes “lawless, barbaric, and indefensible” and urged the international community to move beyond verbal condemnations.

Anwar warned that the strikes undermine Qatar’s long-standing role as a facilitator of dialogue and peace efforts. “To strike Qatar is to blatantly sabotage those very efforts for peace,” he said, adding that the assault should be viewed as an attack on all nations that support mediation and diplomacy.

The prime minister broadened his criticism to describe a widening pattern of violence across the Middle East. He highlighted the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, citing mass civilian casualties, destroyed hospitals, and extensive displacement, and condemned ongoing dispossession in the West Bank. He also pointed to attacks affecting Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Iran as evidence of what he called “utter contempt for the very foundations of civilization and international order.”

Anwar characterized recent Israeli statements denying the prospect of a Palestinian state as tantamount to a declaration of permanent apartheid and a rejection of UN resolutions and Palestinian self-determination.

Noting frustration with repeated but ineffective international rebukes, Anwar said, “Our people have become weary of words.” He urged countries, particularly those with close ties to the United States, to recognize a responsibility to press for concrete measures. He argued that past diplomatic overtures met with military responses show the limits of engagement when not backed by enforceable consequences.

Among his specific demands, the prime minister urged the international community to:

Impose “severe punitive actions” against Israel; Halt diplomatic engagements and suspend trade relations tied to the attacks; Support accountability mechanisms to investigate and prosecute violations of international law; Ensure humanitarian aid reaches besieged populations, including protection for an incoming aid flotilla that Anwar described as a “mission of mercy.”

He closed his remarks with an appeal to collective conscience and faith: “May Allah grant us the courage to act and the strength to endure.”

The speech is likely to amplify calls across the Arab and Islamic world for stronger, coordinated diplomatic and economic measures. It also signals Malaysia’s intent to press multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and international legal bodies   for more decisive action in response to the strikes.
