Malaysia Calls for Restraint as Cambodia–Thailand Border Clashes Escalate

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 Dec :  Malaysia has expressed deep concern over reports of renewed armed clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces along their shared border, warning that the violence threatens to undo years of diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilising relations between the two neighboring countries.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended his condolences to the families of those killed or injured in the latest flare-up, stressing that the situation demands urgent de-escalation.

“Thailand and Cambodia are close partners of Malaysia and key members of ASEAN. We urge both sides to exercise maximum restraint, maintain open channels of communication, and make full use of the mechanisms in place,” Anwar said in a statement.

He added that Malaysia stands ready to support any initiatives that can help restore calm and prevent further incidents.

Regional observers fear that the long-standing border dispute, if left unchecked, could trigger a cycle of confrontation and undermine ASEAN’s collective stability. Malaysia reiterated that the immediate priority must be to halt hostilities, protect civilians and return all parties to a diplomatic path grounded in international law and ASEAN’s principles of neighborly cooperation.

“Our region cannot afford to see long-standing disputes slip into confrontation,” Anwar stressed, urging both sides to recommit to peace and dialogue.

The ASEAN community continues to monitor developments closely as efforts intensify to reduce tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
