BANGKOK: Thailand set a new benchmark for sporting pageantry as the 33rd SEA Games opened last night at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium, delivering a breathtaking fusion of water, light, and cutting-edge technology.
Transforming the venue into a vast shimmering “stage of water” filled with more than 800,000 liters, organizers reimagined the meaning behind “SEA” (South-East Asia) under the unifying theme, “We Are One Connected by the SEA.”
The water stage became the heart of an immersive and eco-conscious ceremony, blending artistry and sustainability in equal measure. From a dramatic drone countdown illuminating the Bangkok sky to dazzling LED graphics, projection mapping, martial arts displays, underwater ballet, and jetski and flyboard stunts, the night unfolded as a showcase of creative excellence and regional pride.
The torch relay saw Deputy Governor of Bangkok Sanon Wangsrangboon pass the flame to the final torchbearer, Thailand’s double Olympic taekwondo champion Panipak Wongpattanakit, who ignited a digital Grand Cauldron that rose in a pillar of radiant light. Laser formations and drone choreography carried the flame across the stadium, shaping a glowing emblem of unity for all 11 ASEAN nations.
Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand officially declared the Games open, marking the start of a festival of regional sporting spirit.
Malaysia marched in with a 59-member contingent from athletics, waterskiing, and ice skating. Led by flag bearers Andre Anura Anuar, the national triple jump ace, and waterski sensation Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah, the team donned traditional-inspired attire in national colors.
Each color carried meaning: white for purity and discipline, blue for resilience and flow of energy, yellow for hope and aspiration, and red for courage and fighting spirit.
The 33rd SEA Games begin with Thailand sending a powerful message that innovation, unity, and sustainability can shine together on Asia’s biggest sporting stage.
