MAKKAH: Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah has concluded a three-day conference focused on the role of universities in fostering human values and advancing intellectual awareness, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The forum brought together academics, researchers, and experts in education and intellectual affairs to discuss how higher education institutions can strengthen ethical foundations and contribute to social development.
In its opening session, participants examined how Saudi universities cultivate human values and intellectual awareness, with a particular emphasis on the role of research. Another session reviewed both local and international initiatives aimed at advancing intellectual awareness, calling for partnerships to align and unify efforts.
The forum also highlighted the societal responsibilities of universities, including collaboration with religious institutions, engaging with the media, launching community campaigns, and sharing outcomes of such conferences on digital platforms. Delegates called for the creation of a sustainable platform dedicated to specialized research in this area.
Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sanad, president of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, warned of the erosion of moral foundations in some societies due to emerging intellectual trends. He stressed the importance of upholding values and finding practical ways to apply ethical principles in daily life.
During the event, Umm Al-Qura University launched two new online platforms: “Mustasharak” (Your Consultant) and “Wa’i” (Awareness). These platforms provide free, confidential consultations in areas such as mental health, education, family counseling, social support, and career development, with guidance from university experts.
The initiative aims to enhance psychological well-being, social health, and professional growth, while “Wa’i” also serves as a secure channel for reporting intellectual misconduct, radical behavior, or concerning trends. The university said the platforms are designed to ensure privacy, promote values-based environments, and encourage community participation in national protection efforts.
