JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 11: A dedicated commuter rail service for the Kulai–Johor Bahru route is expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2026, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today.
Speaking after the completion ceremony for the Gemas–Johor Bahru Electrified Double-Tracking Project (EDTP) at the Kempas Baru Railway Station, Loke said the service aims to improve mobility for southern Johor residents and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
The new commuter route will utilize existing train sets and coaches that previously operated as the Gemas-Johor Bahru shuttle service.
“Alongside ETS services, we plan to introduce a dedicated commuter train for the Kulai–Johor Bahru stretch. While awaiting new train sets, we will optimize existing coaches by reallocating those used for the Gemas–Johor Bahru shuttle,” he said.
With a travel time of only around 20 minutes, the commuter service will offer significantly increased frequency. Under the new timetable, 16 daily services will operate towards Johor Bahru, while another 16 will travel towards Kulai, providing trains at roughly 30-minute intervals.
Loke said the initiative is expected to encourage residents in Kulai and surrounding areas to shift to public transport, easing congestion and reducing dependence on motorcycles and private cars.
On the Johor Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project, Loke said final approvals are still under discussion, with details expected to be confirmed soon. He noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi have also deliberated on the matter.
“There are still details that need finalization. We aim to conclude them as soon as possible, hopefully by early next year,” he said.
Johor’s Acting Ruler, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, previously expressed concern about traffic congestion that may worsen once the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link begins operations, especially with the ART still pending implementation.
Earlier, in his speech, Loke described the completion of the 192 km EDTP project as a major achievement that reflects the MADANI Government’s commitment to strengthening public transportation services.
He said the project will not only benefit Johor but also support national development by stimulating economic activity, especially around newly built stations.
The project is expected to generate opportunities in logistics, food services, and supporting transport sectors, further enhancing Johor Bahru’s appeal as an industrial and logistics hub due to its strong connectivity with Singapore.
“With shorter travel times and modern station facilities, this provides a real alternative for residents who have long depended on private vehicles,” Loke added.
