MOSCOW: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, will embark on a historic state visit to the Russian Federation from August 5 to 10, marking a significant milestone in the nearly six-decade diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and Russia.
Malaysia’s Ambassador to Russia, Datuk Cheong Loon Lai, described the upcoming visit as the highest-level engagement between the two nations since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in April 1967. It also marks the first official state visit by a Malaysian head of state to Russia.
“His Majesty’s presence in Russia at the personal invitation of President Vladimir V. Putin underscores the depth of mutual respect and the importance both nations place on this longstanding relationship,” said Cheong in a statement to Bernama on Sunday.
The visit will commence in Moscow, where Sultan Ibrahim will receive a state welcome at the Grand Kremlin Palace on Wednesday (Aug 6), followed by an official bilateral meeting with President Putin and a state banquet in His Majesty’s honor.
According to Ambassador Cheong, the leaders will explore new avenues of cooperation in strategic sectors such as trade and investment, higher education, science and technology, digital transformation, food security, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges. Regional and international issues are also expected to be discussed.
“This is a high-impact visit that reaffirms Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral relations with Russia. It reflects the important diplomatic role played by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in representing the country on the global stage,” he said.
In addition to high-level engagements, Sultan Ibrahim is also scheduled to receive briefings from key Russian innovation entities, including the Russian Automotive Technology Development Company and the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub.
His Majesty will then travel to Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, on Friday (Aug 8). There, he will be welcomed by Rais (Head) Rustam Minnikhanov and engage in discussions on collaborative prospects in the halal industry, agricultural technology, trade, and investment.
The King will also tour the Kazan Helicopter Plant to observe the production of various helicopters used in civilian, military, and rescue operations.
In 2024, Russia ranked as Malaysia’s ninth-largest trading partner in Europe and 28th globally, with bilateral trade reaching RM11.46 billion (US$2.48 billion). For the first half of 2025, the trade volume stood at RM4.13 billion (US$945.7 million), signaling continued robust economic engagement.
The state visit is expected to enhance Malaysia’s strategic presence in the Eurasian region and deepen cooperation in emerging industries while promoting cultural and diplomatic goodwill between the two nations.
