Kelantan Police Station Chiefs Required to Arrest One Drug Addict Daily

KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) has introduced a new directive requiring all 56 police station chiefs across the state to arrest at least one drug addict every day, effective 15 July.

Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd. Yusoff Mamat said the initiative was introduced because police stations operate within specific sectors that are closely connected to local communities, making it easier to identify and apprehend drug addicts.

He said the daily arrest initiative will be implemented over a three-month period until October, after which its effectiveness will be reviewed.

“We have made it mandatory for every police station chief to arrest one drug addict each day. At the district level, district police chiefs will focus on arresting drug traffickers, while the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters will concentrate on targeting major drug kingpins and syndicates.

“Previously, we set a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) of arresting 85 drug addicts daily across Kelantan. We have now introduced a new approach by starting at the grassroots level, particularly through police station chiefs, who are undoubtedly more familiar with the presence of drug addicts within their respective jurisdictions,” he said during a press conference after the Kelantan IPK Monthly Assembly here today.

Datuk Mohd. Yusoff added that officers and personnel who fail to meet the prescribed KPI would face disciplinary action.

He expressed confidence that the daily enforcement initiative would make drug traffickers more fearful and deter them from continuing their illegal activities.

“We want to tackle the drug problem at its roots. Therefore, police station chiefs must play their role by arresting at least one drug addict every day.

“When the drug issue is effectively addressed, I believe other forms of crime can also be reduced. Based on our investigations, drug abuse is indeed a major contributing factor to many criminal offences,” he said.
