JOHOR BARU:  The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued compound fines totaling RM445,800 to Singaporean motorists who entered Malaysia without valid Vehicle Entry Permits (VEP) between July 1 and August 2.

JPJ Senior Enforcement Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan confirmed that 1,489 summonses were issued during a special month-long enforcement campaign known as Ops Penguatkuasaan VEP, which focused on foreign-registered vehicles entering Johor through key border checkpoints.

The operation was conducted at several strategic locations, including the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complex, the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) in Gelang Patah, and other key entry points around Johor Baru.

“A total of 14,379 vehicles were inspected during this period. Singaporean drivers without valid VEPs were fined on the spot,” Muhammad Kifli said during a press conference held near the BSI CIQ complex on Sunday night (Aug 3).

Despite the enforcement actions, he highlighted that compliance among Singaporean motorists was relatively high.

“Based on our checks, nearly 90% of Singaporean vehicles have registered and activated their VEP RFID tags, which is a positive sign of growing awareness,” he said.

As of July 31, 277,930 VEP RFID tags have been issued to Singaporean vehicle owners, including those registered under private individuals and companies.

Muhammad Kifli issued a reminder to all foreign vehicle owners that they must register, install, and activate their VEP RFID tags before entering Malaysia.

“Under Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), it is a legal offense for any foreign-registered vehicle to enter or operate within Malaysia without a valid VEP,” he stressed.

He added that JPJ would not compromise with those who fail to comply with Malaysian road transport regulations.

“The VEP enforcement operation will continue, in line with our commitment to protect the integrity of the transport system and ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.

Motorists are urged to check the status of their VEP registration and ensure compliance to avoid fines and potential travel disruptions.
