KUALA LUMPUR — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is intensifying its grassroots machinery in Hulu Kelang as it seeks to reclaim the state seat, long regarded as a bastion of the party’s reform agenda since 1999.
Hulu Kelang was the first seat won by PKR during the landmark 1999 general election, and from 2008 onwards, the party under the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and later Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner consistently retained the constituency with comfortable majorities.

However, in the 2022 state election, PKR suffered an unexpected setback when the seat was lost to Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali by a majority of around 1,600 votes. This came despite PKR’s victory in the Gombak parliamentary seat during GE15, where Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari defeated Azmin in a high-profile contest.
To regain lost ground, PKR is now reorganising its entire election machinery at the grassroots level, including the JDM, local branches, party activists, and long-time reformasi supporters. All branches are said to be restructuring their operations to ensure full involvement of members and volunteers.

The party is also strengthening its outreach efforts by expanding community engagement programmes, covering welfare assistance, sports activities, religious initiatives, women-focused programmes, and support services to help residents access state and federal government incentives.
“These collective efforts reflect our commitment to serve the people and restore PKR’s mandate in Hulu Kelang,” said Gombak PKR treasurer Dato’ Zainol Abidin Mohamed.
