KUALA LUMPUR – Residents of the Bukit Kiara Longhouse are set to receive additional assistance after the government approved an allocation of RM1 million to cover the maintenance costs of their new homes.

Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the assistance is necessary to ensure residents are not burdened by management costs after moving into their new homes.

According to him, the allocation will be channelled to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to manage maintenance costs for at least the first three years.

“We know that when moving into new homes, there are additional needs. We need to take care of maintenance, cleanliness and the surrounding area.

“That is why I agree that we need to help the residents here. I approve RM1 million to cover the maintenance costs,” he said in a speech at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Permanent Relocation of Bukit Kiara Longhouse Residents at Taman Rimba Kiara today.

He said DBKL will manage the fund so that monthly maintenance fees do not burden residents once the project is completed.

Meanwhile, Anwar described the resolution of the Bukit Kiara Longhouse issue as a beautiful story proving that change is possible if leaders, civil servants and the people work together.

“Malaysia can become a more just nation if policies are clear, leaders are committed and the people work together to bring about change,” he said.

The Bukit Kiara Longhouse redevelopment project involves the relocation of residents who have lived in the area for more than 44 years, with some residents set to receive two housing units as part of the agreed settlement.
