KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 – Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has reminded Malaysians that freedom of speech is not absolute and must always be exercised responsibly, in line with the law and with respect for communal harmony.
In a statement issued in conjunction with Malaysia’s 68th National Day, His Royal Highness stressed that public opinions and criticisms should be voiced with sensitivity, keeping in mind the values of mutual goodwill.
“Freedom of speech should not be used as a platform to spread slander and verbal attacks that can divide the community and tarnish one’s dignity,” the Sultan decreed.
The ruler further urged citizens to continuously strengthen the spirit of unity regardless of differences while appreciating the blessings of peace and independence. He encouraged Malaysians to internalize values such as loyalty, respect, and responsibility in daily life.
“We can also take independence as an opportunity to strengthen the development of ourselves, our families, and the nation,” he said.
Sultan Sharafuddin also reminded the people that the celebration of independence is not merely symbolic but carries with it a collective responsibility. He said every Malaysian must uphold unity, nurture a strong national identity, and carry the mandate of independence with pride and accountability.
