KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the challenging situation in Bangladesh, where widespread riots have raised safety concerns for Malaysian students and their families in Dhaka and Mymensingh.

According to Bernama, the Ministry has instructed all necessary measures to be taken to ensure the safety of Malaysian students in Bangladesh.

These measures include relocating students to the High Commission and the Official Residence, where preparations are underway to address their needs.

The Ministry stated that the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka is actively coordinating these efforts despite significant challenges such as internet disruptions.

It said that the High Commission is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Malaysians in Bangladesh and is relying on SMS communication to maintain connectivity.

“As reported by the Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, a curfew has been implemented as of midnight due to the unstable security situation,” it said in a statement today.

“However, the High Commission continues to monitor the welfare of the affected students. Currently, the High Commission plans to go to Mymensingh to provide food supplies to the students.”

According to the Foreign Ministry, a Malaysian student from Bangladesh Agricultural University has successfully been assisted onto a flight and is expected to arrive in Malaysia today.

The statement also urged all Malaysian students in need of assistance to continue to stay in touch and cooperate with the High Commission, which is taking all necessary actions to help Malaysians.

Meanwhile, thousands of students in Bangladesh have been demonstrating since July 1 after the court reinstated public job quotas that had been abolished in 2018.

German News Agency (dpa) reported that the government has imposed a nationwide curfew and deployed the military following clashes between protesters and police during the student protests.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan stated that the military will be stationed in the capital Dhaka and other districts.
