KUALA LUMPUR:  A 22-year-old former employee of a telecommunications company in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) has been arrested for allegedly stealing electronic devices and cash worth about RM83,000 from his former workplace.

Brickfields district police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said the arrest was made following a police report lodged by a company representative after discrepancies in stock were discovered.

According to police, the losses were uncovered after the company reviewed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the premises, which raised suspicions of internal theft.

“The complainant was also informed by a staff member that several units of mobile phones and Apple Watch devices were missing, leading to suspicion that the former employee was involved,” he said in a statement.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had previously worked at the company and had resigned on May 29.

Police said the missing items included 12 mobile phones of various brands, three Apple Watch units, and approximately RM550 in cash.

Hoo added that police also seized several mobile phones, Apple Watch devices, and a bag believed to be linked to the case.

“Preliminary interrogation found that the suspect admitted involvement in the case. He also confirmed that the seized items belonged to the company and said one of the mobile phones had been sent to a shop in Sungai Buloh for repair,” he said.

Checks showed that the suspect had no prior criminal record.

The case is being investigated under Section 381 of the Penal Code for theft by a clerk or servant, and investigations are ongoing.
