KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22: United States (US) President Donald Trump is set to arrive in Malaysia this Sunday (Oct 26) to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit, which will be held in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who also serves as the Madani Government’s spokesperson, confirmed Trump’s attendance, noting that the decision was discussed and approved during the Cabinet meeting on Oct 17 (Friday).
“Confirmed Donald Trump will arrive in Malaysia on October 26. The Foreign Affairs Ministry will announce any changes if necessary,” Fahmi said during a press conference after inspecting preparations at the International Media Centre and International Broadcast Centre for the summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Wednesday (Oct 22).
Also present at the media inspection were Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, acting deputy editor-in-chief (News Services) Mohd Shukri Ishak, and deputy editor-in-chief (Economic News Services) Azlina Aziz.
Fahmi declined to share further details about the US president’s official itinerary, citing security and diplomatic protocols. However, he confirmed that this would mark Trump’s first visit to Malaysia since beginning his second presidential term in November last year.
On Monday (Oct 20), Trump had hinted for the first time publicly that he planned to visit Malaysia “soon” but did not elaborate further at the time.
The 47th ASEAN Summit, themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” will take place from October 26 to 28. The high-level meeting will bring together top leaders from all 10 ASEAN member states alongside key dialogue partners, including the United States, China, Japan, and India.
The event is expected to focus on strengthening regional cooperation, economic integration, and sustainable development, while also addressing pressing global challenges such as security, trade, and climate change.
Security preparations across Kuala Lumpur have already been heightened, with multiple road diversions and safety protocols in place to ensure the smooth arrival of international delegates, including President Trump.
