DBKL Gives Assurance to Monitor Rohingya Refugee Issue in Capital
KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has given an assurance that it will continue to monitor developments involving Rohingya refugees in the capital and work closely with enforcement agencies to ensure public order remains preserved.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud said DBKL is always ready to assist the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) if needed in handling any related issues.
“If they require DBKL’s cooperation, we are always ready to help. We look at the current situation and the PDRM will always contact us if there is a need,” he said.
He said this when met after a walkabout session with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh at the Seri Pantai People’s Housing Programme (PPR) here today.
Elaborating further, Fadlun said every individual, including foreigners in this country, is subject to existing laws, including regulations under DBKL’s jurisdiction.
Earlier, hundreds of Rohingya ethnic individuals who had been residing in the Kuala Muda fishing village, Penaga, Seberang Perai Utara, Penang, were believed to have been relocated from the area before ‘flooding’ the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Bukit Petaling here yesterday.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Fadil Marsus was reported as saying that his team had relocated 113 individuals comprising one Iraqi man, one Somali woman and one Indonesian woman who is the wife of a Rohingya man.
According to him, the relocation of Rohingya refugees involved 36 men, 21 women, 31 boys and 22 girls aged between one month and 60 years.
He said all of them were moved to the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) together with UNHCR representatives at around 8.50 pm yesterday.
It is understood that all refugees holding valid UNHCR documents have been allowed to leave the Kuala Lumpur IPK before moving to locations designated by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
