China Resumes U.S. Soybean Purchases Ahead of Trump–Xi Meeting

WASHINGTON, Oct 29:  In a move widely seen as a gesture of goodwill, China has purchased 180,000 tons of U.S. soybeans, marking its first major order in several months, just one day before the highly anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to trade officials, the purchase was made by state-owned Chinese buyers, signaling a potential thaw in trade relations between the two economic giants after a period of subdued agricultural transactions.

Analysts view the deal as a strategic confidence-building measure aimed at creating a positive atmosphere ahead of tomorrow’s bilateral talks, where trade cooperation, technology access, and global supply chain resilience are expected to top the agenda.

Market observers noted that the renewed Chinese demand provided a boost to U.S. soybean futures, which had faced downward pressure in recent months amid reduced exports to China.

“This purchase sends a clear signal that Beijing is willing to engage constructively,” said one Washington-based trade expert. “It’s a small but symbolically important step before the leaders sit down for their talks.”

The Trump–Xi meeting, set to take place on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, is expected to be closely watched by global markets for signs of progress toward stabilizing U.S.–China relations and reducing trade tensions.
