BEIJING, Jan 11 : China has expressed strong support for Somalia in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, following a phone call between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Somali counterpart, a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry said Sunday.
The call took place during Wang Yi’s ongoing visit to Africa, which is part of his annual New Year tour covering Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho. While the visit to Somalia had been scheduled, it was postponed due to a “schedule change,” according to the Chinese embassy.
During the conversation, Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing’s opposition to Somaliland’s alleged “collusion with Taiwan authorities to seek independence,” highlighting China’s stance on protecting Somalia’s territorial unity.
The statement underscores China’s continued diplomatic engagement in East Africa and its emphasis on supporting partner nations’ sovereignty amid regional disputes.
China’s foreign ministry said the phone call reflected the “longstanding friendship and cooperation” between Beijing and Mogadishu and reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s development and stability.
