Iran Protests Death Toll Exceeds 500 as US Threats Intensify Tensions

DUBAI/JERUSALEM, Jan 11:  The death toll from ongoing protests in Iran has surpassed 500, a U.S.-based human rights group reported on Sunday, as tensions rise over potential foreign intervention.

The group, HRANA (Human Rights Activists News Agency), stated that it had verified the deaths of 490 protesters and 48 security personnel during the two-week unrest. More than 10,600 individuals have reportedly been arrested amid the demonstrations, which represent the largest anti-government protests since 2022.

The unrest comes as the Iranian clerical establishment faces unprecedented public dissent, with citizens taking to the streets to demand political reforms and greater freedoms.

The situation has been further complicated by threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has warned that he may intervene if Iranian authorities use force against protesters. In response, Tehran has warned that any such intervention could prompt targeting of U.S. military bases in the region.

Human rights groups continue to monitor the situation closely, highlighting concerns over the heavy crackdown and mass arrests. Analysts say the protests reflect widespread frustration over economic hardship, government repression, and political corruption.

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence and the potential for further regional instability if tensions between Iran and the United States increase.
