Bar Fire In Bangkok Claims 27 Lives, Cause Under Investigation
BANGKOK: At least 27 people have died while 18 others were injured after a fire broke out at a bar in the Lat Phrao area, Chatuchak district, Bangkok early Monday morning.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who visited the scene at approximately 2.40 am, said the cause of the fire, which occurred after midnight, is still being investigated by police and forensic officers.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has handed over the location to the investigation team for a detailed examination to identify the cause of the fire, as well as to determine measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
Chadchart said initial observations found that the fire spread rapidly through the ceiling area, while most of the plastic tables and chairs inside the premises did not suffer severe damage.
“We are still awaiting the results of the victim identification process by medical personnel and relevant authorities.
“Family members are requested to follow official developments through the coordination centre,” he said in a statement on Monday.
According to the BMA Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, the fire claimed 27 lives, consisting of nine men and 18 women.
A total of 18 others were injured, including eight in critical condition.
Authorities believe most of the victims died due to smoke inhalation, but the actual cause of death can only be confirmed after forensic examination and investigation are completed.
The Governor said preliminary reports also indicated that several victims were found near the emergency exit on the left side of the building, which is believed to have possibly been obstructed.
However, he stressed that further investigation must be conducted before any conclusions are drawn.
Chadchart said the BMA will inspect the premises’ operating licence and its level of compliance with safety standards, particularly the number and condition of emergency exits, the visibility of exit signage, and whether evacuation routes were obstructed.
Meanwhile, Thai local media reported that Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene early Monday morning and received a briefing from officials regarding the incident.
Anutin was quoted as saying he had spoken with a musician who was performing when the fire broke out.
“He said the fire started at the electrical switchboard and after that, everything happened very quickly.
“Several explosions occurred and everyone tried to save themselves from the smoke and fire,” said Anutin.
He said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
