Bandung Spirit Still Relevant as Malaysia Champions ASEAN Centrality

KUALA LUMPUR: Seventy years ago, in Bandung, Indonesia, leaders of Asia and Africa gathered at the 1955 Asian-African Conference to declare that newly independent nations and those still struggling for freedom should not remain passive observers but must instead be the architects of their own destiny.

That spirit of sovereignty and solidarity, first affirmed in Bandung, remains profoundly relevant today, serving as a reminder that freedom is the essential foundation for any nation.

In a world now marked by trade wars, shifting geopolitical dynamics, and intensifying technological rivalries, Malaysia has stressed that ASEAN must remain the central platform for the region. ASEAN centrality, officials said, is critical to ensuring cooperation that is inclusive, open, and rooted in the rule of law.

As ASEAN Chair this year, Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding that role, pointing to major initiatives such as the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0 (ACFTA 3.0). The agreement, finalized this year, will be presented to leaders during the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit.

In today’s era of increasingly complex interdependency, Malaysia emphasized that the region must neither bow to hegemony nor retreat into isolationism. Instead, the guiding principle should be one of “sovereign interdependence,” a model of connectedness grounded in choice and resilience.

This, Malaysia stressed, is the path forward to ensure that Asia, with ASEAN as its heartbeat, continues to lead the region and the world toward openness, equity, and shared prosperity.
