KUALA LUMPUR: Singer-songwriter Daiyan Trisha and actress Mira Filzah have criticised some of the organisers of the Blockout 2024 social media movement for using it as a “tool of slander.”

Yesterday, Mira stated on X that some online users went to her social media accounts on purpose to “check” whether or not she was actively supporting the Palestinians.

“Those who have followed me on Twitter for a considerable amount of time are aware that I frequently retweet content endorsing the Palestinian people.

She added that the Blockout campaign was quickly turning into “maki out” (literally, “insult out”), saying that if some people felt I wasn’t supporting them enough, they should feel free to block me rather than insulting and defaming me on social media.

The 30-year-old Daiyan, whose true name is Trisha Mohd Nasaruddin, revealed on her Instagram account that she had donated RM100,000 to charities that supported the Palestinian people, providing “solid proof” of her active support.

Viva Palestina, Mercy Malaysia, Global Peace Mission, and Cinta Gaza are the NGOs in question.

“I will always remember the Palestinian people. Daiyan apologised to everyone who believed she did not support them and stated, “I help them on the quiet. I’m not bothered about being “blocked.”

There are other Malaysians on the Blockout 2024 list besides Mira and Daiyan.

Awal Ashaari, Anna Jobling, Neelofa, Scha Alyahya, Meerqeen, Datin Intan Najuwa, Sheila Rusly, Eyka Farhana, Nadhir Nasar, Mierul Aiman, Amir Ahnaf, Nabila Razali, Janna Nick, and Ruhainies Zainul Ilyas are among the others. The social media campaign got its start on May 6 at the Met Gala 2024 fashion show in New York, USA. It was intended to “name” famous people who either publicly backed Israel or remained silent on Palestine. As a result of the campaign, American actress Kim Kardashian lost three million followers on social media.

Selena Gomez, BlackPink, and Taylor Swift were among the other artists who lost support.
