KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29: The 47th ASEAN Summit, held in Malaysia from October 26 to 28, concluded with the adoption of 80 outcome documents, signifying a major step forward in regional collaboration, economic integration, and peacebuilding efforts.
The prime minister’s senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said the documents encompassed joint statements between ASEAN and its dialogue partners, including the United States, Japan, India, New Zealand, and Australia.
He said the outcomes also emerged from key regional platforms such as the ASEAN+3 Summit, the East Asia Summit (EAS), the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Leaders’ Meeting, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit.
“Among the proudest achievements was the formal admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member, marking the fulfilment of Malaysia’s long-standing vision of an inclusive and united region,” Tunku Nashrul said during a daily briefing by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Another major highlight of the summit was the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and U.S. President Donald Trump.
“This accord demonstrates Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to regional peace and its proactive role in resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. We also appreciate the United States’ support in fostering constructive engagement,” Tunku Nashrul added.
On the economic front, the summit finalized two landmark trade initiatives: the upgraded ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) 3.0.
These agreements aim to enhance market access, reduce trade barriers, and promote cooperation in digital transformation and green growth.
Leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as the main framework for addressing the Myanmar crisis, calling for the immediate cessation of violence and improved humanitarian efforts.
The summit further discussed critical regional and global issues, including the South China Sea disputes, the Palestine conflict, and transnational crimes such as human trafficking, online scams, and job frauds.
Tunku Nashrul said ASEAN leaders expressed strong support for the Philippines, which will assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, while Malaysia pledged continued collaboration to uphold the spirit of regional unity and progress nurtured during its chairmanship.
“Malaysia is proud to have played a leading role in shaping an inclusive, peaceful, and forward-looking ASEAN. We are confident that the momentum achieved in Kuala Lumpur will continue to strengthen regional solidarity,” he concluded.
