Anwar Urges Local Councils to Eliminate Middlemen in Ramadan Bazaar Permit Process

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on local authorities (PBT) to avoid the use of agents or middlemen in the registration process for Ramadan bazaar business permits, warning that such practices often lead to abuse and unnecessary extra charges.

Instead, Anwar proposed that local councils adopt an online registration system similar to the one implemented by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), which he said has proven to be more organized, transparent, and effective in curbing unethical practices.

“The online registration method is not only more systematic, but it can also prevent certain parties from taking advantage by imposing additional fees for personal gain,” he said.

Anwar stressed that Ramadan bazaars provide important opportunities for lower-income groups to earn additional income during the fasting month and that local authorities should facilitate, not complicate, the process.

“These bazaars are an opportunity for the people, especially those at the grassroots level, to do business and earn a living. Local councils should cooperate to ensure the process is orderly and free from those collecting commissions,” he said, adding that while corruption is being addressed at higher levels, irregularities still persist at the lower administrative levels.

He was speaking to reporters after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Jumhuriah in Taman Dato Harun, attended by about 2,000 worshippers. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was also present.

The Prime Minister also instructed local authorities to ensure clean and comfortable facilities throughout the Ramadan period. He said that if local councils and state governments work closely together, he would engage with Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming to further improve basic amenities such as water supply and sanitation, particularly at Ramadan bazaar sites.

At the same time, Anwar reminded the public to maintain cleanliness following the enforcement of the Community Service Order under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672), which came into effect yesterday for minor littering offenses.

“Those who dispose of rubbish irresponsibly will face action, including community service,” he said.

Muslims in Malaysia are expected to observe the first day of Ramadan on Feb 19, marking the beginning of a month-long fasting period.
