CEBU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim attended the BIMP-EAGA Summit in Cebu, Philippines on Wednesday (May 7), where leaders focused on strengthening subregional development and economic cooperation.
BIMP-EAGA, which stands for Brunei Darussalam,Indonesia,Malaysia, Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area, was established in 1994 to accelerate inclusive economic growth, development and prosperity in less-developed areas within member countries.
Anwar arrived in Cebu at 1.50pm for a two-day working visit that also includes participation in the 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is also accompanying the Prime Minister.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who is ASEAN Chair for 2026, said the summit discussions highlighted key programmes and projects that are already delivering tangible benefits to local communities, particularly through job creation, improved connectivity and expanded economic opportunities.
“These achievements remind us that regional cooperation delivers the greatest value when it improves the well-being of local communities,” Marcos said.
He urged ASEAN members to turn vision into action, stressing that stronger implementation is needed to ensure long-term impact.
“Let this summit renew our resolve to translate vision into action and planning into lasting impact. Together, let us continue building a more connected, resilient and prosperous BIMP-EAGA for present and future generations,” he added.
Marcos also highlighted the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035, describing it not only as an economic integration roadmap but also a commitment to sustainable and meaningful development that directly benefits people’s daily lives.
The Philippines will assume the ASEAN Chairmanship from Malaysia on Jan 1, 2026. Under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together,” Manila has outlined three key priorities: Peace and Security, Prosperity Corridors, and People Empowerment.
The BIMP-EAGA platform continues to serve as a key mechanism for boosting trade, investment and infrastructure connectivity across ASEAN’s eastern growth regions.
