All forms of transportation will use QR codes starting next year

Next year, all forms of transportation will likely use Quick Response Codes (QR) to make the Johor-Singapore border more traffic-friendly.

As of now, only bus riders and motorcycles can use QR codes, according to Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who is the Minister of Home Affairs.

BSI and KSAB, which are both in the Sultan Iskandar Building, got the first part of this QR Code System last June, he said.

“We will choose the contractors in this first phase, and then we will use the QR code on more types of transportation, such as private cars and so on.”

“We are targeting next year based on the projection that the Johor-Singapore route is expected to receive 150 million vehicles per year compared to 116 million before. Singapore is also the highest contributor of tourists in Malaysia for the ASEAN countries, and both are Thailand,” he pointed out.

He made this statement to the press yesterday at a conference in Bukit Aman following a meeting of the Special Committee to Address Johor Embankment Congestion.

He explained that the purpose of QR codes is to directly lower the amount of traffic.

The goal is to cut down on wait times, especially during rush hours, and more than two million cars use this QR code every day.

“Saving between two to three seconds is very significant on this busy route; if there was one counter for passport stamps, then the vehicle had to move forward a little for the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and toll matters, but all these matters were consolidated through this QR method,” said the man.

Saifuddin Nasution, Fahmi Fadzil, Saifuddin Nasution, and Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay were all at the Special Committee Meeting to Address Johor Embankment Congestion earlier. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof led the meeting.

Previously, the news reported that since June 1, the MyRENTAS app and the QR code system at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) have recorded nearly two million user movement events.

Jati Jana (M) Sdn Bhd’s Chief Operating Officer, Azril Rizal Abdullah, said that the company was able to cut the wait time for bus riders on the road route between Malaysia and Singapore from 120 minutes to 15 minutes during busy hours.

As part of the department’s plan to ease traffic at the Malaysia-Singapore border, especially at BSI, JIM launched MyRENTAS, a cross-border QR code system to Singapore, on June 1. The system will be operational for three months.

We made the system available for a three-month trial period that began in September to make things easier for Malaysians who travel daily, mostly for work, from Johor Bahru to Singapore. This is part of JIM’s digital transformation plan.
