May 22 (Reuters) – Late Friday night, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit near Honaunau-Napoopoo on Hawaii’s Big Island. The USGS said that the state’s volcano center was checking out Kilauea.
Kilauea is on Hawaii’s Big Island. It is one of the most powerful volcanoes in the world.

Since December 23, 2024, the volcano has been exploding on and off.

The USGS’ Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) said earlier on Friday that the next eruption would happen between May 24 and May 27. They based their forecast on prediction models.

Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu all experienced the quake. The USGS says it happened about 23 km (14 miles) below the surface.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the earthquake would not cause a tsunami, and there were no reports of damage or deaths right away.

Mihika Sharma did the reporting in Bengaluru, and Kevin Liffey edited it.
