KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Vietnam are ready to further strengthen their bilateral relationship and explore new avenues of strategic cooperation, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today following a telephone conversation with his Vietnamese counterpart, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Anwar expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s commitment to advancing bilateral ties, noting that Hanoi plans to dispatch a ministerial-level delegation to Kuala Lumpur in the near future to bolster strategic collaboration.

“We remain in close communication and look forward to further engagement, particularly ahead of our next scheduled meeting in China in early September,” Anwar stated.

The conversation between the two leaders also covered pressing regional and international issues, including recent developments in US trade tariffs. Both sides explored potential future cooperation in key areas such as innovation, energy security, and the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, a regional effort aimed at enhancing energy connectivity and sustainability.

Anwar also highlighted the positive progress in ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, acknowledging the role of a Malaysian-led monitoring team in observing the situation on the ground.

“Both Malaysia and Vietnam reaffirmed the importance of sustained efforts to monitor peace initiatives in order to maintain stability across the ASEAN region,” he said.

The reaffirmation of Malaysia–Vietnam cooperation comes at a time when Southeast Asian nations are seeking closer alignment on economic, security, and regional integration strategies amid an increasingly complex global landscape.
