VLADIVOSTOK: A series of nine moderate earthquakes rocked Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in just one hour, shortly after a massive 8.8-magnitude quake struck off the coast earlier this morning, the strongest seismic event in the region since 1952.

According to the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the cluster of aftershocks recorded magnitudes ranging from 4.8 to 6.0 and were located at varying distances from the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The sequence began with a 5.0-magnitude quake occurring approximately 350 kilometers from the city, followed by a 4.8-magnitude quake 273 kilometers away, and another of equal magnitude 212 kilometers away. Subsequent tremors measured 5.3, 6.0, 5.2, 5.0, 5.4, and 6.0 on the Richter scale, with epicenters scattered between 204 and 402 kilometers from the capital at depths ranging from 10.8 to 88 kilometers.

Earlier in the day, at approximately 6:00 AM local time, a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck offshore in the Pacific Ocean, prompting tsunami alerts across the region, including warnings issued by authorities in Japan, the United States, and the Philippines. Russia’s own seismological center later adjusted the magnitude to 8.7.

The Russian Health Ministry confirmed that one person was injured as a result of the quake. Local officials have reported no widespread damage at this time, though assessments are ongoing. Residents across Kamchatka reported intense ground shaking and were urged to evacuate coastal areas as a precaution.

The tsunami alert for the Kamchatka region was lifted 11 hours after the initial tremor, as no significant waves made landfall. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the nearest major city, lies hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter and was not directly affected by any large tsunami waves.

The Klyuchevskoy volcano, the tallest active volcano in Eurasia located in Kamchatka, also began erupting shortly after the quakes, with scientists observing lava flows and explosions from the summit though it remains unclear if the seismic activity triggered the eruption.

Authorities remain on high alert amid the ongoing aftershock sequence, warning residents to stay prepared for possible additional tremors in the coming days. Emergency services and geological experts continue to monitor the situation closely.
