Malaysia Renews Global Call for Justice in Gaza at BRICS Summit

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6, 2025 (Voice of Malaysia)— Malaysia has once again urged the international community to speak out against the ongoing crimes against humanity in Gaza and the atrocities faced by the Iranian people, warning against global silence in the face of injustice.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the call during his intervention at the BRICS Leaders’ Summit, which opened Sunday in Rio de Janeiro. He emphasized that BRICS, as a bloc representing the Global South, must emerge as a moral voice for universal justice, denouncing all forms of oppression and defending human dignity.

“Malaysia’s position remains firm—the future of our world must not be determined by geopolitical rivalries or power blocs,” Anwar said. “Instead, it should be shaped through cooperation, inclusive prosperity, and a collective commitment to a fair, secure, and inclusive digital future.”

The summit, which focused on multilateralism, global economic reform, and ethical artificial intelligence governance, also served as a platform for addressing pressing international conflicts.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, speaking during the “Global Governance, Peace, and Security” session, echoed concerns over the wars in Gaza, Iran, and Ukraine. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation in the Middle East, stating:

“Certainly, nothing justifies acts of terrorism by Hamas. However, we also cannot remain indifferent to the massacres committed by Israel in Gaza — the indiscriminate killing of civilians and the use of hunger as a weapon of war.”

Lula reaffirmed Brazil’s position that a lasting solution to the Gaza conflict must involve ending the Israeli occupation and recognizing a sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.

He also denounced violations of Iran’s territorial integrity, drawing parallels to Brazil’s condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine, and urged all parties in the Ukraine conflict to engage in immediate, direct dialogue aimed at achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace.

As of July 3, 2025, nearly 58,000 Palestinians have been reported killed since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023.

In his address, Prime Minister Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to justice, peace, and multilateralism and called for BRICS to play a greater role in shaping a rules-based global order that serves the needs of all nations—not just the powerful few.
