Three Chinese women have been arrested by police after allegedly paying for a hotel room in the capital using counterfeit banknotes worth RM8,700.
Dang Wangi District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, said preliminary investigations revealed that the payment was made using 87 counterfeit RM100 banknotes.
“Following further investigation, police managed to arrest all three women, aged between 18 and 47, who are believed to be involved in the counterfeit money syndicate,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Items seized during the operation included:
- 87 counterfeit RM100 notes
- One RM50 note
- One RM20 note
- Two branded crossbody bags
- A hotel room access card
- Three smartphones
Investigation Under Section 489B
The case is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code for using counterfeit currency, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a possible fine upon conviction.
All three suspects have been remanded for six days to assist in the investigation.
Police Advise Public to Be Cautious
ACP Sulizmie also advised the public to remain vigilant when handling physical currency, in line with the recommendations of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).
He reminded those who suspect they have received counterfeit money not to circulate it further, but instead to hand it over to the authorities for appropriate action.
