JOHOR BARU, July 4 – An attempted robbery at a petrol station in Iskandar Puteri turned deadly in the early hours of Thursday (July 3), after a shootout left one of the attackers dead.

The incident unfolded at approximately 12.10am, when four masked individuals armed with machetes targeted a parked vehicle at a petrol station near the Second Link Expressway.

According to CCTV footage that has since gone viral, the suspects aggressively smashed the car’s windows, appearing to attempt a robbery. However, the situation took a sharp turn when one of the car’s passengers pulled out a firearm and opened fire in self-defence.

Caught off guard by the gunshots, the suspects fled the scene — three escaped in their getaway vehicle, while one fled on foot.

Johor police chief Commissioner Datuk M. Kumar confirmed that a man’s body was discovered at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) about 90 minutes after the incident.

“At around 1.40am, hospital staff notified the police after two unknown individuals in a dark-coloured vehicle dropped off a man’s body at the hospital entrance and quickly drove away. The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds,” he said in a press statement Friday night (July 4).

Police suspect the deceased was one of the four men involved in the robbery attempt.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and police are actively searching for the remaining suspects.

Authorities are also working to verify the identity of the shooter and determine whether the weapon used was legally owned. Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the Johor police hotline immediately.

Investigations are ongoing.
