KUALA LUMPUR, 4 July 2025 : Malaysian authorities have uncovered a suspected Islamic State (IS) support network operating through a WhatsApp group made up of 100 to 150 Bangladeshi nationals, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) confirmed on Thursday.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dato’ Sri Hj. Mohd Khalid Hj. Ismail revealed that the group is believed to have been actively disseminating extremist ideology, recruiting trusted individuals, and raising funds to support IS-linked activities in Syria and Bangladesh.

The disclosure follows the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi nationals in various locations across Malaysia, all of whom are alleged to be members of the encrypted messaging group.

“Our investigations indicate that this group was involved in recruiting operatives and soliciting funds for the Islamic State’s overseas operations,” said IGP Khalid during a press briefing. “Financial transactions linked to these activities were traced to accounts in Bangladesh.”

While the police have confirmed that money was transferred abroad to support militant activities, IGP Khalid declined to reveal the total amount or specific individuals involved, citing ongoing legal and intelligence-gathering procedures.

“We are still compiling intelligence, and the identities and backgrounds of the suspects remain classified, as the investigation is at a sensitive stage,” he said.

The IGP added that PDRM is working in close coordination with international security and intelligence agencies to uncover the group’s broader network, both within Malaysia and abroad.

He further warned that additional arrests could follow as authorities continue to map the extent of the network’s influence and operations.

“This case highlights the importance of vigilance and international cooperation in preventing the spread of violent extremism,” Khalid said.
