Syed Saddiq Acquitted in High-Profile Trial; Bella Astillah’s Tearful Courtroom Moment Captivates Nation
KUALA LUMPUR||June 25: In a landmark ruling today, the Court of Appeal unanimously acquitted Muar Member of Parliament and MUDA president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman of all charges related to criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of funds, and money laundering—bringing an end to a politically charged legal battle that began in 2021.
The three-member panel, comprising Justices Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Datuk Azman Abdullah, and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin, overturned the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s previous conviction, citing insufficient evidence and a failure by the prosecution to establish a prima facie case.
Speaking to the media outside the Palace of Justice, Syed Saddiq’s lawyer, Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, hailed the decision as a victory for justice and due process.
“The court found no evidence that our client acted dishonestly in relation to the RM1 million used for political programs. Not a single sen went into his personal account,” Hisyam said. “As for the second charge, it was proven the money was his—not anyone else’s. Therefore, no crime occurred, and the abetment charge also lacks validity.
The appellate judges, according to Hisyam, had recognized crucial defense elements that the original High Court proceedings had missed.
Bella Astillah’s Emotional Reaction Draws Public Attention
Among those present in court was popular local actress and singer Bella Astillah, who broke down in tears as the acquittal was read. A long-time supporter and friend of Syed Saddiq, Bella embraced his legal team and family members in an emotional moment that quickly captivated the nation.
“I’m just so relieved. Justice has prevailed,” she told reporters. “I’ve known him personally for years and always believed in his integrity. Today proves what many of us already knew—he is innocent.”
Bella’s heartfelt reaction quickly went viral across social media, with thousands of Malaysians sharing clips and photos praising her sincerity, courage, and loyalty.
The case had drawn widespread public and media attention, given Syed Saddiq’s role as a rising political figure and former Youth and Sports Minister. Initially charged in 2021 in connection with funds from ARMADA, the youth wing of the then-ruling Bersatu party, Syed Saddiq had maintained his innocence throughout the four-year legal battle.
“This isn’t just about me,” Syed Saddiq said in a brief statement following the ruling. “This is about every young person who still believes that clean, principled politics is possible in Malaysia. Today is a win for justice and accountability.”
Bella Astillah’s presence in court also carried symbolic weight. Known for her advocacy work alongside her entertainment career, she has frequently spoken out about issues of governance and integrity. Her open support for Syed Saddiq is being hailed as a gesture of solidarity from Malaysia’s younger generation, which has increasingly become a political force recently.
The Attorney General’s Chambers has yet to indicate whether it will file an appeal against the Court of Appeal’s decision. Legal experts say that without compelling new evidence, an appeal would be difficult to sustain.
As the conclusion of one of Malaysia’s most prominent political trials draws to a close, both supporters and observers are contemplating the case’s implications for the country’s changing political landscape and the future of its youth-led movements.
