KUALA LUMPUR: In a historic move set to redefine the digital landscape of Southeast Asia, Malaysia today officially launched its Strategic Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure, positioning the nation as a key player in the global AI ecosystem.
The launch was officiated byDeputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching at a landmark event hosted by Skyvast and Leadyo Systems.
“This is more than a platform, it is a national declaration,” said Teo.
“Malaysia is not merely adapting to the age of AI. We are shaping it, securing it, and leading it—with trusted partners and the wellbeing of our people at heart.”
The infrastructure, a collaborative effort involving Skyvast, Huawei, TM’s Credence, and Leadyo Systems, with support from the Prime Minister’s Office, Cyberview, PNSB, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, is designed to serve as a sovereign national asset.
It marks a significant departure from dependence on foreign cloud services and computing infrastructure.
“This infrastructure is not just for industry,” stressed Teo. “It empowers startups, students, government agencies, and everyday Malaysians—ensuring access to cutting-edge tools, new jobs, and the protection of our data under Malaysian law.”
According to DataReportal’s 2024 report, Malaysia now has 33.59 million internet users with 97.4% internet penetration.
Data consumption is projected to soar to over 1,000 petabytes monthly, underscoring the urgency for sovereign and scalable digital infrastructure.
The initiative also strengthens Malaysia’s digital diplomacy, particularly its AI partnership with China.
Malaysia becomes the first country to activate a Trusted Data Zone linking Cyberjaya, Perlis Advance Tech Park, and Shanghai Lingang, advancing cross-border governance and innovation.
“China is the world’s largest AI market and a leader in AI infrastructure and policy,” said Teo.
“This collaboration cements Malaysia’s position as a trusted, neutral connector and regional innovator.”
Teo concluded, “What we launch today is a strategic blueprint delivered. It reflects years of diplomacy, policy coordination, and public-private partnership.
With strength, vision, and unity, I proudly declare the Strategic AI Infrastructure of Malaysia—Trusted, Sovereign, and Global—officially launched.”
