Owner of the Blue Bungalow Anxious Again as Erosion Swallows 7 Meters of Shoreline in 3 Days

Strong waves and powerful winds over the past three days have once again left the owner of the iconic blue bungalow in Kampung Tanjung, near here, deeply worried about the risk of erosion.

Mohd Yazit Idris, 66, said the new signs of erosion are now approaching the right-side fence of his house after relentless waves pounded the shore in recent days.

He noted that after an earlier coastal reinforcement project, the distance between his home’s fence and the beach was over 10 meters, but now, only about three meters remain.

“I am growing increasingly anxious as I see the erosion creeping closer to my home’s fence due to the strong waves.

“The recent king tide phenomenon has also contributed to the erosion,” he said.

Previously, Yazit’s bungalow gained public attention when it was at risk of being swallowed by the sea due to severe erosion. However, it was saved after a coastal embankment project was carried out behind his home in early January.

Mohd Yazit now hopes that reinforcement efforts will be extended to the side of his property, as erosion is now encroaching from a different direction than before.

Additionally, he expressed concern over a nearby coconut tree, as its roots are now visibly exposed due to the erosion.

He urged the relevant authorities to expedite reinforcement efforts, as in just three days, more than seven meters of land behind his home has been claimed by the waves.

“Erosion is happening rapidly due to the combination of strong waves and high winds during this Northeast Monsoon season.

“The relief I felt last week has now turned into worry again as the erosion progresses swiftly,” he added.
