KUALA LUMPUR: The Unity Government Leadership Council meeting held at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, has expressed its full support for the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in the upcoming by-election for the Mahkota State Assembly (DUN) seat in Johor on September 28.

According to Berita Harian, Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, the Chief Secretary of the Unity Government, stated that the candidate representing the Unity Government will be named by BN in the near future.

“The entire machinery of the component parties in the Unity Government, especially BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH), will be fully mobilized to win the hearts and support of voters in DUN Mahkota from various ethnic and religious backgrounds.

“Additionally, the meeting confirmed the structure of the Unity Government machinery for the by-election, with Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi appointed as the by-election director and Aminolhuda Hassan as the PH machinery coordinator,” he said in a Facebook statement.

Last Saturday, UMNO Kluang Division proposed three names for the party leadership to consider as the BN candidate for the DUN Mahkota by-election.

The head of the UMNO division, Datuk Md Jais Sarday, stated that the names on the list are potential candidates from within the UMNO division who are seen as having a strong chance of winning the election.

The DUN Mahkota seat became vacant following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on August 2, while receiving treatment at Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom, Kluang.

The Mahkota by-election will be the 10th by-election held after the 15th General Election (GE15) in 2022.

Asyraf Wajdi also mentioned that the meeting discussed and made several decisions, including expressing gratitude and congratulating BN for winning the Nenggiri by-election with a large majority.

Furthermore, the meeting reaffirmed its stance on and seriousness regarding issues related to religion, race, and royalty (3R), and emphasized its commitment to uphold and defend the sovereignty and position of the Malay rulers as stipulated by the Federal Constitution.
