JOHOR BARU: A two-year-old girl has died after falling from the 16th floor of an apartment in Taman Daya here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat reported that a police report was filed at approximately 9:16 p.m. on Tuesday (July 30).

“Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. on the same day. The suspects, a married couple aged 56 and 78, are closely related to the child,” ACP Raub said in a statement on Thursday (August 1).

He explained that the family had been at the apartment’s swimming pool area before returning to their unit on the 16th floor. The suspects had taken the child back to the apartment while the mother and other family members went to the laundry room on the 7th floor.

“Once inside the apartment, the suspects left the child alone in the living room while they went to pray. After their prayers, they discovered the child was missing and, after a frantic search, found her on the 8th floor,” ACP Raub added.

He noted that the child had climbed out of an open window in one of the bedrooms, which lacked a safety grille. The fall resulted in severe head injuries, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body has been sent to Sultan Ismail Hospital for an autopsy.

ACP Raub stated that the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001 due to signs of child negligence. He called on anyone with information to contact the Johor Baru South police hotline at 07-218 2323.
