E-hailing driver faces charges for assaulting a female passenger caught on video
KUALA LUMPUR: ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood, the chief of the Brickfields district police, announced today that an e-hailing driver who abused and dragged a female passenger out of his car has been taken into custody and charged in court.
The victim, known only as Maya, had previously posted on social media about the June 13 event in which she was forced out of the car by the e-hailing driver, beaten with a metal bottle, and left behind.
The 28-year-old suspect was taken into custody this morning, according to a statement made by Ku Mashariman, following the victim’s police report on the day of the event.
“On June 19, the suspect appeared in the High Court facing charges under Section 324 of the Penal Code. The court fined the suspect RM2,000.
He declared, “We implore the public to cease speculating on this viral video.”
The victim’s plea for a non-toll route during the Maju Expressway (MEX Highway) incident infuriated the suspect.
The victim claimed that in an attempt to scare her, the suspect started speaking abusively to her and turned on loud music in the car.
After that, Maya reported the event through the inDrive app, which alerted the driver right away and escalated the case.
He responded by pulling over to the side of the road, shoving Maya out of the car, and hurling a metal flask in her direction.
Maya was taken to a police station by a bystander who intervened and helped her file a report.
While highlighting the fact that drivers are independent contractors and not directly hired by InDrive, the company acknowledged the occurrence and stated its intention to enhance safety protocols.
