MELAKA CITY: A total of 102 locations have been identified as flood-prone areas in Melaka following a high-tide phenomenon expected to continue until November 17.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh urged residents, particularly those living in coastal areas, to remain vigilant due to the risk of flash floods during the period.

“I urge the people of Melaka to prepare for this high-tide phenomenon, which is expected to continue until November 17, as coastal areas may experience flash floods.

“Among the preparedness measures implemented is round-the-clock flood monitoring involving six major river basins, with rainfall and river water level data continuously recorded.

“The early warning system has also been strengthened with the installation of 14 flood warning sirens and 10 monitoring cameras at strategic locations throughout Melaka,” he told reporters at a campaign event for the 16th Melaka State Election at the Barisan Nasional (BN) Operations Centre in Kota Laksamana here today.

Also present were MCA President Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong and BN candidate for the Kota Laksamana State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seat, Melvin Chua Kew Wei.

Ab Rauf said the 102 locations were identified as flood-prone areas after recording at least three flood incidents over the past three years.

The Melaka BN Chairman said the state government had also prepared flood control assets comprising 21 water control gates, 21 pumping stations and 14 mobile emergency pumps for deployment to critical areas.

In addition, flood mitigation infrastructure monitoring covers 105 flood retention ponds, alongside maintenance works in high-risk river basins.

Meanwhile, Ab Rauf said 447 minor works worth RM40.38 million had been carried out throughout this year to strengthen efforts to reduce flood risks.

“These measures reflect the state government’s continued commitment to strengthening flood management infrastructure, improving disaster preparedness and reducing risks to the safety and well-being of the people.

“Through the Melaka State Disaster Management Committee, regular updates and early warnings will be issued to ensure that emergency response measures can be implemented effectively.

“Members of the public, particularly residents in flood-prone areas, are advised to remain vigilant and obtain the latest information through the Melaka State Government’s official channels,” he said.
