GE16: Corruption Issues, Najib’s House Arrest Become Additional Burden for UMNO – Analyst

KUALA LUMPUR: What was initially intended to attract greater support for UMNO in the 16th General Election (GE16) through the issue of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s house arrest has now become an additional burden for the party, further reinforcing its association with corruption.

Senior Lecturer at the School of International Studies (SoIS), College of Law, Government and International Studies (COLGIS), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Misrinah Misban said efforts to promote the narrative surrounding Najib’s house arrest appeared to be part of UMNO’s political strategy to engage voters ahead of GE16.

However, she said the attention given to the issue, including discussions on fundraising initiatives to help cover Najib’s fine, had drawn mixed reactions from the public and required careful consideration from the perspective of party strategy.

“This development highlights the challenges faced by UMNO in balancing efforts to defend the welfare of its former leaders with its agenda of rebuilding the party’s image based on integrity.

“To ensure sustainable support, a restructuring of its communication strategy may be necessary so that the party’s good intentions can be more clearly understood by all segments of society,” she said today.

Previously, a video clip featuring a strongly worded statement by a Universiti Malaya (UM) student regarding the Tabung Haji scandal and fundraising efforts to help Najib Razak pay his RM50 million fine went viral, attracting public attention.

Ummi Umairah Bakhit expressed concern over corruption and questioned how future leaders should position themselves on the issue.

Earlier, Kepong Member of Parliament Lim Lip Eng criticised the Prisons Department for instructing Najib Razak not to disclose the conditions of his house arrest under the conditional pardon granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Lim said the conditions of Najib’s house arrest were not state secrets and should not be kept confidential, describing the move as “ridiculous”.

Commenting further, Misrinah said UMNO should allow the legal process involving Najib to take its course under existing laws, without attempting to exploit the situation for political gain, which could ultimately weaken the party itself.
