GEORGE TOWN: A property agent has been remanded for two days by the Magistrates’ Court here in connection with a hit-and-run accident that claimed two lives along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway near the Penang Bridge interchange yesterday.

The remand order, which takes effect today, was issued by Magistrate Nur Hanisha S H Hamid to facilitate investigations under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).

Meanwhile, lawyer R.S.N. Rayer, representing the property agent, said after the proceedings that police had initially applied for a four-day remand against his client, but the court granted only two days.

“My client has cooperated with the police and voluntarily surrendered at the police station. Under the law, any individual who is detained has the right to remain silent and is not required to give any statement. Therefore, the court has allowed the police to proceed with their investigation,” he said.

In the incident, which occurred at approximately 4 am, Mohamad Nazhif Faris Mohd Fauzi, 22, and Daniesha Hana Mohd Hairul, 20, were killed after the motorcycle they were riding was struck from behind by another vehicle along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway near the exit to Penang Bridge.

Northeast District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said both victims were travelling from George Town city centre towards the bridge when the accident occurred.
