DUNGUN: A four-month-old baby girl died after losing consciousness while at a daycare centre in Bandar Al Muktafi Billah Shah, near here, this morning.
Dungun District Police Chief, Superintendent Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat, said the baby was confirmed dead at Dungun Hospital at approximately 12.45 pm.
He said police received a report regarding the incident at 3.41 pm.
“Initially, the baby was sent by her mother to the daycare centre at around 8 am in good health.
“At around 10 am, the daycare centre staff found the baby unconscious before she was taken to the Durian Mas Health Clinic and referred to Dungun Hospital,” he said here today.
Nik Ab Halim said upon arrival at the hospital, medical officers examined the baby and administered respiratory assistance.
“However, the baby was confirmed dead at approximately 12.45 pm.
“Initial examination of the victim’s body found no physical injuries, and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” he said.
He said an investigation paper has been opened under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
“We will investigate whether there were elements of negligence or abandonment while the victim was under the care of the daycare centre.
“Two caretakers who were on duty during the incident have been identified and will have their statements recorded to assist in the investigation,” he said.
He added that police will also record statements from the parents and relevant witnesses, as well as obtain a report from the medical authorities.
