Nepal Floods: 77 Malaysians to Be Sent Home, 55 Still Unaccounted For

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 77 Malaysians who are safe in Tibet and Nepal following last week’s mudslide and flood tragedy have been brought to Kathmandu to undergo repatriation procedures for their return to Malaysia.

Unity Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said this development was informed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan during the Cabinet meeting regarding the situation of Malaysians affected by the disaster in Nepal.

“The Foreign Minister also informed that there are another 55 Malaysians who have yet to be traced.

“They (the 77 Malaysians) have been brought to Kathmandu for the repatriation process to return to Malaysia,” he said at a press conference following today’s Cabinet meeting.

In addition, the Cabinet also took note of the approval of a contribution worth US$1 million (approximately RM4.3 million) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to assist humanitarian efforts in the affected areas.

The media had previously reported that 55 Malaysians were still unaccounted for following the major floods in Nepal.

That information was received from travel agencies and is being compiled and verified by the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Cabinet took note of the Prime Minister’s decision to approve a contribution of US$1 million to assist humanitarian work in Nepal.
