Government To Continue Tariff Negotiations With US – PM

PORT DICKSON: The government will continue negotiations with the United States (US) regarding the new 10 per cent tariff imposed on Malaysia, as announced by President Donald Trump, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the negotiations are now being carried out by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, after being initiated by Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz previously.

“The tariffs announced so far, we accept, although we had already sent negotiations through Tengku Zafrul and now, Johari is continuing them.

“If there are any aspects that we are dissatisfied with, we will raise them again.

“However, at least now we are relieved because the tariff is relatively low compared to many other countries,” he said after attending the National Spirit Programme at the Basic Army Training Centre (PUSASDA) here today.

Also present were Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar; Armed Forces Chief, Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman; Army Chief, Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman; and Deputy Defence Minister, Adly Zahari.

Earlier, the Trump administration was reported to be imposing new tariffs of 10 per cent and 12.5 per cent on goods from 60 trading partners, including the European Union (EU), effective today.

This follows allegations that the countries concerned had failed to enforce forced labour bans, coinciding with the expiry of the temporary 10 per cent global tariff.

The move is the latest effort by the White House to revive Trump’s campaign vision of imposing broad tariffs on a global scale.

In February, the US Supreme Court struck down reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10 per cent to 50 per cent introduced in 2025 under a national emergency law aimed at reducing the US trade deficit.
