Harimau Malaya Eager to Face Thailand
KUALA LUMPUR: The clash with Thailand on 1 August is the most anticipated match for Harimau Malaya midfielder Aliff Haiqal Lokman Hakim Lau in the 2026 ASEAN Cup campaign.
However, before facing Thailand, Tan Cheng Hoe’s squad must first take on Myanmar and Laos in their opening two Group B fixtures.
Aliff, who joined Penang FC on loan this season, explained that Thailand’s quality is one of the factors that motivates the Harimau Malaya players to be even more spirited when facing the seven-time champions.
“Thailand, because we know what their quality is like. When we know a country has that kind of quality, we feel a greater drive and spirit to play,” said Aliff when asked which team he was most eager to face.
The Harimau Malaya squad will depart for Yangon tomorrow for their first Group B match against Myanmar at Thuwunna Stadium this Saturday.
Tan Cheng Hoe’s side will then return home to host their second match against Laos at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium on 28 July.
Next, the Harimau Malaya squad will travel to Bangkok to face the War Elephants in their third match at the Rajamangala Stadium, before rounding off their Group B campaign against the Philippines at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium on 8 August.
Cheng Hoe, who was appointed as interim head coach on 25 June, faces a difficult situation in preparing the team for the 2026 ASEAN Cup, as the tournament falls outside the FIFA international match calendar and coincides with Super League clubs just beginning their pre-season training for the 2026/2027 season.
This situation has seen many key players, including Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) sensation Arif Aiman Hanapi and Faisal Halim, unable to be included in this Harimau Malaya squad.
Commenting on the matter, Aliff considers this the perfect time for other players to gain exposure and showcase their abilities with the national squad.
“In my opinion, the current squad consists of the best players available as well. Personally, I feel the desire to prove something for the national team and regain my previous form,” he said.
